The first time we visited Killarney, as an Artist, I was blown away by the diversity of the surrounding countryside. If you imagine Killarney as being the central hub of a wheel, each spoke radiating out from that centre for approximately 30kms, would represent a uniquely different type of landscape.

On your travels along each radius, you would experience lush rainforest, cascading waterfalls , pebble streams, 360'view grass topped hills, stands of perfectly straight eucalyptus trees, steep rocky outcrops, mountains, rolling hills complete with hoop pines and cows, winding country roads atop plateaus that savour wonderful views north, south, east and west, rustic farm houses with old machinery scattered around the paddocks, yellow sunflower fields(summer), red sorghum fields(winter), lavender fields, bright red soil abundant with wild flowers of all colours(seasonal) bright green potato fields, coloured parrots and much more..

On our first trip to Killarney 15 years ago, we arrived via Cunningham’s Gap and Freestone as the Boonah road was only accessible to 4wd.

This Freestone road takes you through some of the quaintest townships, especially when the plain trees and poplar trees are dressed in all their autumn finery. The weather was a bit drizzly on the day but that didn’t worry us, as the mountains hugging the left hand side were enveloped in a misty silver mist which reminded me of the mountains you see in Chinese paintings.

Now, the road through Boonah is completely bituminized through to Killarney. This is our favourite way of reaching Killarney. When you pass through Boonah following the signs to the Heas',Queen Mary Falls, your first sector takes you up through an 8km winding bitumen road engulfed with stands of eucalypt forest and steep rocky cliffs. When you reach the top it is hard to believe how high you are, and of course it will be your first sighting of the Tiviot Falls.

You then cross over a cattle grid and spread out in front of you is the most amazing view of green rolling hills, hoop pines , the fattest cows I have ever seen, and of course the Condamine Gorge in the distance.

On the right hand side when you have just crossed over the grid you will notice a small waterhole with a stream flowing from it. Would you believe this is the starting point for the Condamine River which flows into the Murray Darling river system then ends in South Australia. Which makes this little water hole the beginning of the longest river system in Australia.

On the left hand side of this road you will notice thick rainforest hugging the road. A small well maintained wire fence can be seen at the base of the trees. This is what is called the 'rabbit proof fence’ the border of Queensland and N.S.W.

When you continue along on this road you have the choice of driving through the Condamine Gorge, 14 magical water crossings (a picnickers dream) or taking the left hand road and driving up along the top of the Condamine Plateau. This road winds through potato pastures, and rolling hills as far as the eye can see. Both roads end in the quaint township of Killarney. (A prosperous working country town complete with Polo Cross fields, public swimming pool and golf course.)

Because of the diversity and beauty of this magical place it is a paradise for all artists, photographers, bushwalkers, bird watchers, bike riders, picnickers, or for just plain touring in an open top car.
